About the Coalition
-
The Castroville Coalition, a grass roots community 501c3, first formed in 2001 as a response to a need for local input and guidance on the distribution of County of Monterey redevelopment funds. The Coalition serves the unincorporated community of Castroville. It was instrumental in convening meetings that engaged all sectors of the community, garnering resources, and building consensus regarding how redevelopment activities could have a positive impact on the town of Castroville. The results of this 7-year-long intensive, community process was the development of the Castro Plaza Family Resource Center (FRC) and a local branch of the Monterey County Free Libraries system, and the generation of $450,000 in addition to governmental resources to launch the Castro Plaza project.
Following its success with the creation of the new community resources, the Coalition has served as an incubator for other community initiatives including the development of the Japanese School Park, the conversion of a pre-war schoolhouse into an outdoor cultural, commemorative museum, and the long-term collaboration between county government services, the North Monterey County Unified School District, and the citizens of Castroville. It also serves as an umbrella organization for other community efforts, including the community Neighborhood Watch Association and the Teen Leadership Council.

The Castroville Coalition completed a strategic planning process in 2017 to guide its continued work in the community. With an understanding of community needs, challenges, strengths, assets, and community interests, the Coalition members reviewed their past work and results achieved to help them identify the organization’s strengths and understand what qualities and attributes supported their previous success. This information formed the foundation for the Coalition’s visioning process and identifying the Coalitions goals going forward:
Support the Expansion of Social, Health, and Economic Services in Castroville: work with existing agencies to expand services to Castroville to include legal services, financial literacy activities, employment and career development services, and enhanced public assistance services.
Facilitate and Support the Creation of a Clothing Distribution System: increase collaboration and North Monterey County regional efforts to create a clothing distribution program through the North Monterey County Unified School District (NMCUSD).
Improve Local Senior Programs: partner with the North Monterey County Recreation and District to improve senior programming and facilities.
Increase Outdoor Sports Resources: partner with existing organizations that provide outdoor recreation activities for children and adults, to increase awareness, collaboration, and regional efforts to expand outdoor sports opportunities.
Build a Community Pool: have completed a feasibility study to develop a wellness facility with a pool that is accessible to all members of the community.
